BREAKING: Chaos as Jigawa delegates disrupt Atiku-Obi coalition meeting in Abuja
A high-stakes political coalition meeting featuring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other prominent political figures was thrown into disarray on Saturday after delegates from Jigawa State disrupted proceedings.
The meeting, convened by the National Political Consultative Group (North) at the Abuja Continental Hotel, was aimed at fostering a strategic alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, tensions flared when Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State.
In swift protest, several Jigawa delegates stormed the stage, blocking the appointed speaker and vocally rejecting the individual’s authority to represent them. The delegation insisted they would not accept imposed representation, demanding autonomy in selecting their spokesperson.
The disruption brought the meeting to an abrupt halt, as confusion spread across the hall.
As the situation escalated, security personnel, including operatives from the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and private security guards, moved swiftly to secure the venue. A protective ring was formed around key figures including Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi, ensuring their safety as order was gradually restored.
