Court orders IGP to arrest INEC chairman for contempt

The Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, for contempt and disobedience of court orders.

The order followed a suit filed by the Action Alliance (AA) against INEC. The party had asked the court to compel the commission to recognise all state chairmen elected under the leadership of Adekunle Rufai Omoaje’s National Executive Committee.

Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi had earlier ruled in favour of the Action Alliance, declaring the Omoaje-led convention valid, as it was monitored by INEC officials and held in line with both the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. Despite this, INEC failed to comply.

Dissatisfied with the commission’s defiance, the court held Yakubu in contempt, awarding a cost of N100,000 against him and giving him seven days to restore the names of the recognised state chairmen on INEC’s portal.

The judge warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would result in the police effecting Yakubu’s arrest.
