Defection hits PDP as Bauchi North senator joins APC
Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal crises within the opposition party.
His defection, announced in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, brings the composition of the 10th Senate to APC – 74; PDP – 27; Labour Party (LP) – 4; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 2; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – 1; and Social Democratic Party (SDP) – 1.
In his letter, Senator Samaila said his decision followed what he described as “grave internal challenges” within the PDP, which had hindered his ability to effectively serve his constituents.
“As one deeply committed to the service of our nation and the welfare of my people, I have found it necessary to realign my political engagements with a more progressive platform,” he said.
He added that his move to the APC was influenced by President Bola Tinubu’s “bold and transformative reforms” aimed at restoring economic stability and strengthening governance.
The lawmaker also commended Senate President Akpabio for his leadership of the upper chamber and pledged loyalty to his new party.
