Why Sowore was taken to prison – Police
The Nigeria Police Force has debunked reports claiming that human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was re-arrested.
Earlier reports suggested that Sowore, who was recently arrested for organizing the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest and granted bail on Friday, was immediately re-arrested inside the courtroom following his release.
However, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed the claims as false. He explained that if Sowore had been re-arrested on a fresh charge, he would not have been taken directly to prison.
“Stories that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arraigned on Monday are procedurally incorrect. A person arrested on a new charge cannot be taken straight to prison. No prison will accept such a person without a remand warrant duly issued by a competent court,” Hundeyin said, according to Leadership.
He added that Sowore was only taken to prison to comply with the court’s directive for him to perfect his bail conditions.
“He was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions, nothing more,” Hundeyin emphasized.
