The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports alleging an assassination attempt on the life of Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. A.M. Yerima, who recently made headlines following a confrontation with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

A statement released on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Command, Josephine Adeh, clarified that the viral claim suggesting that unidentified men attempted to eliminate the officer is entirely unfounded.

According to Adeh, there is no record or report of such an incident anywhere in the Federal Capital Territory, and the public has been urged to ignore the alarming narrative circulating online.

“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.

The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.

The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the statement read.

Earlier reports had claimed that unknown individuals dressed in black and travelling in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates allegedly trailed Lt. Yerima from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.

Sources quoted in the report stated that the Navy officer became aware of the surveillance and carried out what was described as a “strategic maneuver” to evade the suspected attackers around 6:30 p.m.

The same source claimed the matter is being handled discreetly with the seriousness it requires and further details are being withheld to avoid jeopardizing ongoing inquiries.

Lt. Yerima recently made news after a heated confrontation with Minister Nyesom Wike at a disputed land site in Gaduwa District, Abuja, during a joint security operation.
