Reps endorses mandatory electronic transmission of election results

The House of Representatives has given its approval to a proposal that would compel the electronic and real-time transmission of election results.

The approval was granted on Wednesday during a clause-by-clause consideration of a committee report on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.

Lawmakers agreed that the new provision would strengthen transparency in the electoral process by making electronic transmission of results compulsory.

Currently, existing electoral laws do not impose an obligation on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit election results in real time.
