Prominent lawyer and human rights advocate, Deji Adeyanju, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for naming Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), describing the move as both timely and vital for reinforcing Nigeria’s justice system.

In a statement released on Thursday, Adeyanju commended the President for assigning such a crucial national role to a legal professional reputed for integrity, competence, and an independent mindset.

He added that the development signals a meaningful step toward genuine reforms within the justice sector.

“I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment of Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions,” Adeyanju said.

He stressed that Oyedepo’s professional background and principled disposition make him an ideal fit for an office that directly influences the administration of justice.

“Mr. Oyedepo’s demonstrated independence of mind makes him well-suited for a role that sits at the heart of the rule of law,” he stated.

Adeyanju maintained that the DPP’s office must be shielded from political intrusion if justice is to prevail, noting that the President’s choice offers renewed hope for transparency and fairness.

“Public prosecutions must be insulated from political interference if justice is to be served, and this appointment gives reason for cautious optimism,” he stated.

The rights activist further emphasized that the President’s decision to appoint an experienced professional indicates a commitment to due process and competence in driving reforms.

“By entrusting such a sensitive office to a seasoned professional, the President has shown that reform of the justice sector can be driven by capacity and respect for due process,” he said.

According to him, sustaining this kind of approach could help rebuild public confidence in the nation’s criminal justice architecture, especially in matters of prosecution.

“This is a step in the right direction and one that, if sustained, can help restore faith in public prosecutions as a tool for justice rather than persecution,” Adeyanju remarked.

He concluded by urging the new DPP to uphold the highest standards of fairness, professionalism, and independence in his role, noting that the appointment is worthy of public praise.

“This appointment deserves to be applauded,” Adeyanju said.
