Angela Okorie remanded in Suleja prison over alleged cybercrime
Nollywood star Angela Okorie has been ordered to remain in custody at the Suleja Correctional Centre, Niger State, after she was arraigned in court over alleged cybercrime-related charges.
The actress was reportedly picked up in Lagos on Tuesday by operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and later moved to Abuja to face prosecution.
Speaking on the matter on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed to *TheCable Lifestyle* that Okorie’s arrest and detention were carried out by officers of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja.
The development was also confirmed by filmmaker Ajemba Stanley, a close associate of the actress, who disclosed that Okorie was charged to court and subsequently remanded.
Stanley, reacting through a series of vague but strongly worded social media posts, criticised the process leading to her detention, alleging misconduct and misuse of authority.
“You arrested Angela Okorie at midnight yesterday, flew her to Abuja as early as 6am, and this morning took her to court, where she was remanded in Suleja prison,” Stanley wrote.
“So the judiciary can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep tonight knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison,” he added.
He further stated his intention to head to Abuja in a bid to secure her release, insisting that due process should be respected.
“Whoever is in charge of Angela Okorie’s arrest should let her go and approach a competent court. If you feel Angela has defamed you, the right thing is to sue her, not use the police to oppress Nigerians,” he said.
Stanley also revealed that several human rights groups were monitoring the situation closely.
As of press time, the police had not issued a detailed statement clarifying the specific offences Okorie is alleged to have committed. However, sources within the entertainment industry suggested that the matter may be linked to the long-running dispute between Okorie and fellow Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson.
The feud reportedly intensified last year after Okorie made contentious remarks concerning Johnson’s health and accused her of insincerity claims that sparked public backlash across social media platforms.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Nigeria Police Force and Okorie’s legal representatives were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
