IGP orders redeployment of DPOs ahead of FCT Area Council elections

The Nigeria Police Force has redeployed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the Federal Capital Territory ahead of Saturday’s Area Council elections.

The directive was issued on Friday by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and carried out by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye.

Dantawaye explained that the move forms part of broader security measures designed to boost operational efficiency and ensure professionalism throughout the election period.

In a statement released by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, it was stated:

“The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye as directed by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has redeployed and reshuffled Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the FCT Area Council Elections coming up on Saturday, 21st February, 2026.

“The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, while complying with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, charged the affected Divisional Police Officers to discharge their duties with utmost professionalism, impartiality, and dedication”.

The Command reiterated its resolve to protect the electoral process and ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible poll.

It also called on residents to maintain order and participate responsibly in the elections.

According to the statement: “The FCT Police Command urges all residents to remain peaceful, law abiding, and actively participate in the democratic process by exercising their civic responsibility on Election Day.

“The Command further informs members of the public that there will be a restriction of movement across the FCT from 8:00 PM 20th February 2026, to 6:00 PM 21st February, 2026, except for essential service providers and election officials.

“Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the FCT Police Command through the following emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.”
