BREAKING: INEC shifts 2027 presidential, NASS elections to January 16

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a revised schedule for the 2027 general elections, bringing forward the presidential and National Assembly elections to January 16, 2027.

In a statement, the electoral body also fixed February 6, 2027, for the conduct of governorship elections and polls into State Houses of Assembly across the country.

Under the earlier timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections were scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections were billed for March 6, 2027.

INEC explained that the adjustment became necessary after the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the new Electoral Act, 2026, which prompted a review of the electoral calendar.
