Police in Benue State have detained two individuals linked to the killing of a National Youth Service Corps member, Mr Benjamin Msughaondo, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over a false motorcycle theft allegation.

The arrest was confirmed on Friday in Makurdi by the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Edet Udeme.

Udeme disclosed that the incident took place late Sunday night at the Major settlement area close to the Buruku Local Government Secretariat.

She explained that the victim was accused by suspected hoodlums of stealing a motorcycle and was attacked by a mob without any form of verification.

Preliminary investigations, however, showed that the allegation was untrue, as ownership documents confirmed the motorcycle belonged to the deceased.

The police spokesperson added that while two suspects have been taken into custody, another suspect is still on the run.

“He was wrongly accused of stealing a motorcycle, and without verifying the claim, he was mobbed to death,” Udeme said.

She noted that efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing suspects and assured that a full investigation would be conducted to bring all those responsible to justice.
