The Supreme Court, in a split decision of three to two, on Thursday nullified the 2025 National Convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The convention, which took place between November 15 and 16, 2025, was invalidated on the grounds that it was conducted in clear violation of an earlier judgment of the Federal High Court, which had ordered that the exercise be suspended pending the fulfillment of certain conditions.

Delivering the lead majority judgment, Justice Stephen Jona Adah held that the disregard for a lawful court order by a faction of the PDP aligned with Seyi Makinde was a serious breach that could not be condoned in a constitutional democracy.

He emphasized that obedience to court orders is fundamental to the rule of law and must be upheld at all times.

In a dissenting opinion, Justices Haruna Tsanami and Abubakar Sadiq Umar argued that the matter was an internal party affair and, therefore, not justiciable.
