Police dismiss ASP, four others over Delta killing
The Nigeria Police Force has sacked Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other officers over the unlawful killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed the development, stating that the dismissed officers will face prosecution.
The incident involved the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi and triggered widespread reactions online.
Police reports indicated that the attack occurred on April 26, 2026, when officers attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that Ogidi had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
Following the incident, Usman and members of his team were arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters for disciplinary proceedings.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved their dismissal and recommended prosecution, with the decision forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
The action was based on findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which reviewed the case and internal procedures.
The panel concluded that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP had said.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.
Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he had added.
