Professor Shima Gyoh to reopen Otukpo Library 48 Years after first commissioning
The historic Otukpo Divisional Library in Benue State is set to reopen 48 years after it was first commissioned, with renowned academic, Professor Shima Gyoh, scheduled to perform the reopening ceremony.
The event, billed for Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Otukpo Divisional Library, is being described by organizers as a major step towards reviving the culture of learning and preserving the educational heritage of the Idoma community.
Professor Gyoh, who originally commissioned the library in 1978, is expected to return as the Guest of Honour to officially reopen the institution in what organizers described as a “rare and remarkable full-circle moment.”
According to the invitation released ahead of the event, the reopening represents more than the restoration of a building, noting that it symbolizes a renewed commitment to knowledge, community development, and educational advancement.
“This reopening is more than the restoration of a building; it is the revival of a vision, a recommitment to knowledge, and a celebration of our people and our enduring journey of learning and transformation,” part of the statement read.
Organizers also described the development as an effort aimed at “restoring the lost legacy of Otukpo” and repositioning the library as a timeless institution for future generations.
The ceremony is expected to attract community leaders, education stakeholders, academics, students, and residents from across Benue State and beyond.
The event is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. prompt at the Otukpo Divisional Library, Otukpo, Benue State.
