EPL: Paul Merson predicts key role for Alonso in Chelsea’s Conference League campaign
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has said Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, could use the Europa Conference League as a platform to experiment and assess his squad if the Blues qualify for the competition.
Merson believes the tournament would give Alonso an opportunity to better understand his players and make tactical adjustments.
He made the remarks in his Sportskeeda column ahead of Chelsea’s final Premier League match against Sunderland on Sunday.
“The Conference League will give Xabi Alonso the chance to improvise stuff,” Merson said.
“He can use that competition to find out more about his squad. For a new manager at a big club, that is an asset.”
Alonso was recently appointed Chelsea manager and is expected to take charge after the current season concludes.
