The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has affirmed Dr. Shamsuddeen Aliyu Haido as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was made during the party’s primary and candidate affirmation exercise held in Sokoto on Friday.

Chairman of the party’s primary election committee, Bello Labaran Gwadabawa, said Haido and other candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives, and Sokoto State House of Assembly emerged through a consensus arrangement.

He explained that delegates participated in an open affirmation process, where names of candidates were announced and members indicated approval by raising their hands.

“We called out the names of all candidates from governorship to senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly, asking members to indicate approval by raising their hands,” he said.

Gwadabawa noted that all candidates received unanimous endorsement from delegates at the exercise.

Among those affirmed for the Senate were Mainasara Abubakar Sani for Sokoto Central, Abdurrahman Umar Maisalati for Sokoto East, and Bilyaminu Tanimu for Sokoto South.

The party also confirmed candidates for the House of Representatives and the Sokoto State House of Assembly.

Speaking after his affirmation, Dr. Haido expressed gratitude to party leaders and members, pledging to prioritize development if elected governor.

He described the process as transparent and expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the 2027 elections.

Sokoto State NDC Chairman, Bello Sani Yabo, urged residents, especially young people, to support the party ahead of the polls.

The exercise was witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, party leaders, and other stakeholders.
