BREAKING: Insecurity: CAN declares June 14 ‘black Sunday’ to mourn terror victims
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has designated Sunday, June 14, 2026, as “Black Sunday” in honour of victims killed in terrorist attacks and other violent incidents across the country.
The association also announced a three-day nationwide prayer programme scheduled to run from June 12 to June 14.
Speaking after the 2026 National Church Denominational Leadership Summit, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said while prayers remain important, they must be accompanied by decisive measures to address the worsening security crisis.
According to him, urgent and practical steps are needed to curb the wave of violence affecting many parts of the country.
Okoh called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and intensify efforts to restore peace and safety nationwide.
He also advocated for the speedy establishment of state police and the decentralisation of the nation’s security framework to enable quicker responses to security threats.
The CAN leader further demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped persons and urged authorities to ensure justice for victims and their families.
