Idoma’s future depends on wise choices in 2027 — Edwin Ochai
The President-General of the Idoma Association USA, Edwin Ochai, has urged the Idoma people to carefully scrutinise candidates seeking elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the future of the nation depends on the choices made by voters.
Ochai made the call after attending the 2026 Idoma Centenary Plus Lecture in Otukpo, where he reflected on the challenges and opportunities facing the Idoma nation.
According to him, the election season presents an important opportunity for the people to prioritise competence, integrity and vision over sentiments, personal relationships and short-term interests.
“As we approach another election season, this lesson becomes even more critical. The Idoma nation must rise above sentiments, personal relationships and short-term gains. We must carefully evaluate every candidate seeking public office,” he said.
The Idoma Association USA leader stressed that the future of the Idoma nation should not be left to chance, insisting that voters must examine the character, competence and leadership records of aspirants before casting their ballots.
He identified key questions voters should ask candidates, including whether they possess a clear vision for the Idoma people, have a proven record of service, can unite rather than divide the nation, and are committed to development, education, youth empowerment, security and economic growth.
“The future of our people depends not on who speaks the loudest or spends the most money, but on who possesses the vision, competence, integrity and commitment to advance the interests of the Idoma nation,” he stated.
Ochai said the centenary lecture reinforced the need for visionary leadership capable of mobilising the collective strengths of the Idoma people for sustainable development.
While acknowledging the numerous achievements of Idoma sons and daughters in academia, public service, the military and other professions, he noted that the community must now focus on building stronger institutions and fostering greater unity to achieve its development aspirations.
He urged voters to make informed decisions that would benefit not only the present generation but also future generations of Idoma people.
According to him, leaders seeking public office must demonstrate a genuine commitment to service and a long-term development agenda rather than personal ambition.
Ochai further called on the Idoma nation to embrace unity and collective purpose, describing them as essential ingredients for progress and prosperity.
“This election period should serve as a wake-up call. The future of the Idoma nation cannot be entrusted to chance. We must scrutinise the character and competence of each candidate, making informed decisions that will benefit not only the current generation but also future generations,” he said.
He added that the lessons of the Idoma Centenary Plus celebration should inspire the people to make wise choices and support leaders capable of advancing the collective interests of the nation.
