Suspected armed Fulani cattle rustlers have reportedly attacked Okpafie community in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two persons and making away with more than 40 cows.

The attack occurred on Wednesday night at Oyilawu in Okonobo Ward, according to local sources.

One of the victims was identified as Mr. Benjamin, a resident of Okpafie, who was reportedly killed during the raid. The attackers also allegedly rustled over 40 cows before fleeing the community.

A local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said youths in the village were watching the FIFA Club World Cup match involving Senegal and Belgium when the attackers struck, delaying any immediate response.

The source added that a member of the local vigilante group was also killed at Aidogodo while attempting to stop the attackers from escaping with the stolen cattle.

The latest incident comes just days after suspected armed herders launched deadly attacks on Sai community in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, where several people were feared killed and many others injured as gunmen invaded the community, opened fire on residents and set houses ablaze.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the Okpafie attack.
