Residents of Ondo community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, fled their homes on Tuesday morning following a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

IDOMA VOICE  gathered that the attackers stormed the community in the early hours of the day and opened fire, forcing residents to flee for safety.

A native of the community and Labour Party House of Assembly candidate for the 2027 elections, Hon. Jimmy Nart, said the attack was ongoing at the time of filing this report.

In a message, he wrote: “I just received information from my family that Fulani terrorists are currently attacking Ondo, Ugboju. Protect yourself.”

The latest attack came barely 48 hours after suspected armed herdsmen invaded Otukpo-Nobi community in the same local government area, where more than 18 people were reportedly killed.

As the attack intensified, reports indicated that several residents were killed, although the exact casualty figure could not be immediately confirmed. Disturbing images from the community showed victims lying in pools of blood, while terrified residents fled to neighbouring communities and nearby bushes.

The renewed violence sparked protests, with angry youths blocking the busy Otukpo–Agatu Road. The protesters barricaded the highway with burning tyres and other objects, bringing vehicular movement to a complete standstill as they demanded urgent government intervention to end the recurring attacks in Benue South.

The protesters accused authorities of failing to protect vulnerable communities despite repeated deadly attacks in Akpachi, Otukpo-Nobi and now Ondo village.

Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, did not respond to calls or a text message seeking confirmation and comments.

Residents said the situation remained tense as many families continued to flee the area for fear of further attacks, while community leaders called for the immediate deployment of security personnel to prevent the violence from spreading to other communities in Otukpo Local Government Area.
