Flood submerges Delta High Court, homes, businesses after heavy rainfall

Heavy flooding has submerged the Delta State High Court in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area, following an overnight downpour that lasted into Friday morning.

The flood also affected residential buildings and business premises across several Agbarho communities, including Orhokpokpor, Ehwere, Ughrwughelli and Oviri, leaving properties damaged and disrupting daily activities.

The persistent rainfall overwhelmed existing drainage channels, causing floodwaters to inundate roads and restrict the movement of residents and motorists.

Many residents returned to flooded homes to find furniture, electrical appliances, clothing, food items and other valuables destroyed by the rising water.

Several shop owners were forced to suspend business operations after floodwaters entered their premises, while motorists and pedestrians struggled to access major roads in the community.

Residents blamed the recurring flooding on the lack of adequate drainage infrastructure and the blockage of natural waterways.

According to them, poor drainage has continued to worsen the impact of heavy rainfall in the area.

“We woke up to find our entire house flooded. We hurriedly moved our belongings, but many valuable items had already been destroyed. This has become an annual nightmare, and urgent action is needed,” a resident said.

A trader whose shop was also affected described the incident as a major setback, saying the flood destroyed several goods and caused significant financial losses.
