NSCDC arrests 35 year-old over alleged cable theft in Jigawa

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC in Jigawa State has arrested a 35 year old man, Rayyanu Ibrahim, over the alleged theft and vandalism of armoured cables at the Birnin-Kudu Township Water Station.

The incident was reported around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 20, 2026, after suspected vandals allegedly broke into the facility and tampered with its electrical installations.

Following the report, the Divisional Officer of the NSCDC in Birnin-Kudu, CSC A. S. Adam, deployed personnel to investigate the incident.

Acting on information from the Birnin-Kudu Peace and Security Group, operatives arrested Ibrahim around 11:00 a.m. the same day.

The NSCDC said officers recovered an armoured cable from the suspect. The cable was allegedly removed from the affected water station and has been kept as an exhibit.

During questioning, Ibrahim reportedly admitted involvement in the incident. He also allegedly linked himself to other cases involving the theft and vandalism of armoured cables within and outside Birnin-Kudu.

According to the Corps, the suspect disclosed that the stolen cables were sold to scrap dealers.

The NSCDC said it has widened the investigation to identify other individuals allegedly involved in the activities. The Corps is also working to determine the extent of the damage and financial losses suffered by the facility.

Jigawa State Commandant, CC Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to protecting critical infrastructure, especially public utilities.

He noted that attacks on such facilities can disrupt essential services and affect residents.

Ingawa also urged residents to watch for suspicious activities around government facilities and other critical infrastructure. He advised them to report such incidents promptly to the NSCDC or other security agencies.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. The Corps said further action will follow in line with the law.
