Nigeria at 66: FG declares october 1 public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government. He also congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Tunji-Ojo praised Nigerians for their resilience and highlighted the country’s human and natural resources. He also stressed the need for peace and political stability to drive national development.

The minister urged Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers. He called on citizens to embrace patriotism and work towards a better future.

“As we celebrate 66 years of independence, we should remember that there is hope for Nigeria. Our diversity remains a strength, while our collective determination will help build a stronger and more prosperous nation,” he said.
