Atiku accuses Bola Ahmed Tinubu of plotting one-party state
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, saying Nigerians are beginning to see the president’s “true colours.”
Atiku made the remarks in a statement on Saturday while reacting to a court judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
The former vice president alleged that there had been a plot to deregister the NDC, warning that such a move could set the stage for the emergence of a one-party state in Nigeria.
He described the alleged attempt to remove the opposition party through judicial means as further proof of what he called the Tinubu administration’s determination to weaken political opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to Atiku, any effort to restrict political competition or reduce the choices available to voters poses a serious threat to democratic governance and national stability.
He added that the development did not come as a surprise, arguing that recent actions and political signals from the current administration have raised concerns about its commitment to democratic principles.
“Nigerians are now seeing the true colours of President Tinubu, who pretends to be a democrat, but his body language and the sinister activities…” he said.
