Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has made history by becoming the first female Ballon d’Or winner.

The 25-year-old had an exceptionally successful year, contributing to her club’s triumph in the Spanish top flight and Champions League, and aiding her national team in winning the World Cup during the summer.

Bonmati was previously recognized as UEFA’s Player of the Year in August.

She expressed her delight, saying, “This is a dream for me. I have really good players by my side. To reach three straight Champions League finals as a club is special. Let’s hope there’s much more to come.”

“I’ve always said I’m proud to have been born on the same day as Guardiola. To be compared to Iniesta is a privilege. I admire Xavi, Busquets, Messi.

“There’s also a very touching video, from Bonmati’s friends and family. All of them speak well, but this from her father is particularly pertinent.

“I only ask for this not to overwhelm you. Please keep enjoying football, because without that, none of this really makes sense.”
