Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration in Benue State has initiated action by dismantling 40 illegal shanties and structures across various locations in the state capital, Makurdi. According to reports, Tarnongo Mede, the General Manager of the Benue State Urban Development Board (UDB), personally led the demolition operation.

Mede clarified that the decision to demolish these structures was driven by the proliferation of shanties in specific areas of the state. Speaking to reporters following the operation, Mede disclosed that Governor Alia had instructed him to rejuvenate the city. Empowered by this directive, the Board under his supervision is committed to restoring the city to its former splendor.

“In this initial phase, we have cleared over 40 shanties and successfully reopened roads obstructed by developers. This endeavor will persist in areas where developers impede access roads and will encompass the entirety of Makurdi city,” he stated.

Mede further revealed that approximately 800 houses constructed along waterways, particularly around the Kanshio Layout, are slated for demolition.
