Boko Haram goes live on TikTok, hosts Q&A sessions – Security analyst

A security analyst and Senior Fellow at the Extremism Policy Unit of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Bulama Bukarti, has raised an alarm over the growing presence of Boko Haram on major social media platforms, particularly TikTok.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Bukarti warned that the terrorist group is now using social media to spread its extremist ideology through livestreams, Q&A sessions, and propaganda videos — primarily in the Hausa language.

His warning comes just days after Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) revealed that Boko Haram attacks in the past six months had claimed the lives of at least 100 soldiers and 280 civilians in Borno State.

Bukarti, who has studied Boko Haram extensively, said:

“Right now, when you go on TikTok, you will see Boko Haram members’ accounts. They host live programmes where they justify their violent actions and push the group’s ideology in Hausa. They respond to viewer questions and engage directly with the audience.”

He added that just this week, a Boko Haram member posted a 10-minute video targeting him personally for speaking out against the group.

Even more concerning, Bukarti revealed that the insurgents have begun operating unmanned aerial drones for surveillance of military positions in the northeast.

“In the past three months alone, we’ve recorded over seven attacks on Nigerian military super camps. In locations like Sabon Gari, Boko Haram fighters overran camps, killed and captured soldiers, and looted weapons, food, medicine, and other supplies before retreating into the bush,” he stated.
