Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja, on Tuesday, denied bail to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony. However, the court ordered an accelerated hearing of the case.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in June 2021, was brought to court on Tuesday.

In her ruling, Justice Nyako stated that the court would only grant an accelerated hearing in the matter and ordered the prosecution to call its first witness.

Counsel for Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, expressed his displeasure over the ruling, stating that Kanu’s legal team cannot proceed with the proceedings without the opportunity to speak with their client.

Ejimakor highlighted the challenges in having meetings with Kanu while he is in DSS custody, citing monitored conversations and Kanu’s unchanged outfit despite the court’s order.

He alleged unfair treatment of his client, which he argued violated the Nigerian Constitution.

Expressing the dissatisfaction of Kanu’s legal team, Ejimakor requested a stand down of the case to enable them to consult with their client, a request which the court granted.
