A 70-year-old British citizen, Andrew Martin Wynne, along with nine other individuals, was arraigned on Monday before the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing serious charges of attempting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu between July 1 and August 4 this year.
The defendants are accused of engaging in treasonous activities during a week-long nationwide protest, during which they allegedly waged war against the Nigerian state. The charges, brought forward by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), include allegations of breaking into the Abacha Army Barracks and openly calling for a military takeover of President Tinubu’s government.
Further accusations state that the group attempted to forcibly enter the seat of power, during which they allegedly set a police station ablaze and injured officers. They are also accused of inciting the public against the government and causing widespread destruction of public property, including police stations, a High Court complex, and facilities belonging to the National Communication Commission (NCC).
The alleged offenses reportedly took place in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Gombe, among other locations across the country.
All the accused, including Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye, Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Comrade Opaluwa Eleojo Simon, Angel Love Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello Nurudeen Khamis, and Abduldalam Zubair, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The IGP’s counsel, Simon Lough, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), requested that Justice Emeka Nwite remand the accused in prison pending their trial. However, defense counsel are vigorously contesting the bail applications for their clients.
