BREAKING: Multi-storey building collapses, many feared dead in Garki, Abuja

An unspecified number of individuals are feared to have lost their lives, and numerous others are currently trapped following the collapse of a multi-storey building amid heavy rainfall on the night of August 23 in Abuja.

The incident took place on Lagos Street within the Garki village area of Garki II district in the capital city.

The building in question reportedly housed multiple apartments, while the ground floor was occupied by various shops.

Ikharo Attah, a former aide to the previous Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reported that, so far, 37 people have been successfully rescued and transported to hospitals. However, many others remain trapped under the debris. Attah confirmed that a rescue team and first responders were on the scene around 2 am, tirelessly working to save those affected by the building’s collapse.

In a Facebook post, Attah wrote, “So far, 37 persons have been evacuated to hospitals, two are fatally injured, and others are reportedly still trapped. Rescue teams and other personnel are present on the site. Despite ongoing rain, rescue operations are underway, albeit at a slower pace. Efforts are being made to procure an excavator to aid in extracting individuals from the debris.”
