BREAKING: Tinubu not going to US to meet Trump’s vice – Presidency
The Presidency has debunked reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to travel to the United States this week to meet with top American officials following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat of possible military action in Nigeria.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, dismissed the report—originally published by Sahara Reporters—as “fake news.”
The controversial report had alleged that Tinubu was making a sudden diplomatic move to engage the U.S. government after Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged Christian persecution, and his subsequent statement directing the U.S. Department of War to prepare for action.
Ajayi, however, described the story as entirely false and misleading.
“There is a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true,” Ajayi stated.
“I can see that the fake news by Sahara has become the basis for some uninformed commentaries since yesterday. If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President.”
The clarification comes amid heightened public attention following Trump’s comments, which have stirred diplomatic and security debates within and outside Nigeria.
Presidential aides say Tinubu remains focused on domestic governance and ongoing diplomatic engagements but has no scheduled visit to the U.S. or meeting with any American government official at this time
