Buhari govt moves to regulate social media with new code of practice

The Federal Government has alerted all interactive Computer Service Platforms operating in Nigeria of a new Code of Practice to guide their operations in the country.

In a statement by the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, President Buhari has directed the Agency to develop a regulatory framework for all information technology practices in Nigeria to protect fundamental human rights of Nigerians and non-Nigerians living in the country including guidelines for interracting on the Digital Ecosystem.

The Code according to the Federal Government is an intervention to streamline the relationship of Online platforms and Nigerians while protecting them from harmful and unlawful Contents.

The statement noted that the Code had the input of relevant agencies like the Nigerian Communications Commission, National Broadcasting Commission as well as digital platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram among others which has been incorporated into the draft code of practice.
