‘Akara business is better than a bank job’ — Delta Gov’s aide backs Remi Tinubu’s advice
Ossai Ovie Success, a media aide to Sheriff Oborevwori, has defended the small-scale business advice given by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, expressing disappointment over the backlash it attracted.
The First Lady recently sparked debate after a viral video showed her encouraging unemployed women to venture into small businesses such as selling akara (bean cakes) and roasted corn.
The remarks drew criticism from many Nigerians, who argued that government officials should focus on creating jobs rather than advising the unemployed to engage in petty trading.
Some critics also said the comments reflected a lack of hope in addressing the country’s rising unemployment rate.
Reacting in a post on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Ovie argued that the akara business can be more profitable than a bank job.
He wrote, “Akara business is better than Bank Job Sometimes. If you fry akara in a good location, after all cost, you make N20/akara and you sell 500 pieces per day.
“That is N10k/day, N60k/6 day week and N240k/month. Better than a bank job. Some even make more than a million Naira a month .
“How much again is bank job .? Ask yourself. Before i forget , know that Akara business is not 6 to 6 job oooo, it’s 3 hours daily .
“I am disappointed in those looking down on Akara business”.
