The unveiling of the 14-man commissioner-nominees and special advisers/assistants submitted by Governor Hyacinth Alia to the Benue State House of Assembly marks a pivotal moment in the young administration’s journey.

After more than 70 days since taking office, Governor Alia has presented his team to steer the ship of governance in the state.

The nominees, hailing from various regions of the state, reflect a diverse array of expertise and backgrounds. This composition holds the potential to bring different perspectives and approaches to the table, which could prove beneficial for tackling the multifaceted challenges that the state faces.

As the Alia government inches closer to being fully operational, it’s reasonable to anticipate an increased focus on capital projects across the state. The foundation for these projects has been laid by the nomination of “competent individuals” to critical positions. The time for tangible development and progress has come, and the people of Benue eagerly await the fulfillment of these expectations.

However, the fervent support for Governor Alia should not overshadow the need for a healthy and constructive exchange of ideas. Democracy thrives when there’s a space for open dialogue and the exchange of varying opinions. It’s essential that supporters of the Alia administration recognize that constructive criticism is not synonymous with enmity. Instead, it is an opportunity for growth, improvement, and a more resilient governance.

Governor Alia himself must be prepared to embrace diverse viewpoints and acknowledge that differing opinions can contribute to more informed decision-making. In a democratic society, leaders are best served by a balanced blend of loyal advocates and critical thinkers. The habit of dismissing dissent as antagonism should be replaced with an open-minded approach that welcomes a wide range of perspectives.

Governor Alia must promptly shift from the previous mode of response to critics to one that is more focused on proactive action. The first 70 days should have been a period of laying the groundwork for development, not engaging in back-and-forth disputes. With his team in place, it’s time to concentrate on translating campaign promises into impactful policies.

While Governor Alia has a duty to lead, it’s also pertinent for former Governor Samuel Ortom to support the new administration. The progress of the state should transcend political affiliations, and leaders should unite for the betterment of the people they serve. Similarly, the influence of distinguished leaders like Senator Akume should be utilized to attract federal projects that can augment the development initiatives of the state government.

The unveiling of the commissioner-nominees signals the dawn of a new era for Benue. Governor Alia’s administration has the potential to shape the trajectory of the state positively. However, this potential can only be realized through robust collaboration, open dialogue, and swift action. The people of Benue deserve a government that prioritizes progress, unity, and the overall well-being of the state. The time for action is now
