Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove is “awake” and “alert” after being admitted to intensive care on Sunday following a collapse during his team’s Serie A match against Inter Milan.

The match was suspended in the 16th minute after Bove suddenly fell to the ground, prompting both sets of players to signal for medical assistance. Play was later abandoned.

Fiorentina confirmed that, after an “uneventful night,” the 22-year-old was “awakened and extubated” this morning. The club reported that Bove was “awake” and “alert,” and he had spoken with his family, club management, coach, and teammates, all of whom rushed to see him as soon as they received the good news.

The club added that further tests would be conducted in the coming days to determine the cause of the incident.

Bove was immediately attended to by medical staff and then transported by ambulance after the referee instructed both teams to leave the pitch.

The midfielder joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan from Roma in August, with an option to make the transfer permanent. His first goal for Fiorentina came in October, when he scored against his parent club.

Bove has represented Italy at various youth levels, reaching the under-21s, but has yet to earn a senior cap.

“The doctors at Careggi University Hospital who are treating the player have confirmed that diagnostic tests are ongoing,” said Fiorentina.

“Fiorentina would like to thank Careggi University Hospital and all of the doctors and staff for the wonderful humanity and professionalism they have shown.”

Fiorentina subsequently confirmed Wednesday’s Coppa Italia last-16 match at home against Empoli will go ahead.

The club said: “After the video call that Edoardo Bove had with all his team-mates, the coach and his staff as well as the team have decided to return to the pitch immediately and prepare for the match against Empoli on Wednesday.”
