Nigerians in the United Kingdom are mourning the tragic death of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, just weeks after she relocated to the UK with her two children to join her husband, Jacob Okeniyi.

The 49-year-old woman, who had been battling breast cancer, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024, in Sunderland.

A statement from the Nigerians in the UK community on X revealed that Mrs. Okeniyi arrived in the country on September 16, 2024. Her passing has renewed concerns over the wellbeing of Nigerians relocating to the UK.

Earlier this year, other Nigerians, including Saheed Wahab, died shortly after relocating to the UK, raising alarm within the Nigerian diaspora community.

In the message announcing Mrs. Okeniyi’s death, the Nigerian community launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses, as her husband is unable to cover the costs. “Every contribution, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Further details provided by an X user, Godwin Ejeh, revealed that Mrs. Okeniyi had been receiving treatment for her cancer upon arrival in the UK. Doctors advised that she was unlikely to survive and recommended palliative care, which was administered at home due to the family’s status in the country. On the day of her passing, she experienced a sudden change in condition after requesting assistance, and despite efforts from her caregivers, she passed away at 4:30 p.m.

As of Wednesday night, her husband confirmed that £5,800 had been raised, with £3,557 contributed through GoFundMe.
