Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has said it was “impossible” to substitute Moses Simon in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations opener against Egypt.

Simon, who plays for Nantes in Ligue 1, was a constant thorn in the flesh of the Pharaohs on Tuesday.

The winger took on players and created chances down the left hand side of Nigeria’s attack.

He was replaced late in the game by Chidera Ejuke, while Sadiq Umar came on for Taiwo Awoniyi.

Eguavoen told the media after the game: “We know the strength of our players, we know Ejuke is good from the left side, but it was impossible to substitute Simon [so we put Ejuke on the right].

“It was a tactical change and Ejuke had chances to finish the game. For Umar, maybe first time nerves in such a big stage, he gave me some excuses after the game and we will talk to him later.”
