English striker Mason Greenwood, on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, marked his return to football by making his debut in La Liga against Osasuna on Sunday. This match was Greenwood’s first appearance since playing for Manchester United in January 2022.

Greenwood had faced serious allegations of attempted rape and assault in October 2022, but the charges were subsequently dropped by England’s Crown Prosecution Service. The decision came after key witnesses withdrew their statements, and new evidence emerged, leading to the conclusion that a conviction was no longer realistically possible.

Getafe coach Jose Bordalas substituted Greenwood into the game in the 77th minute, replacing Juanmi Latasa, with the score tied at 2-2. The home fans at Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium showed their support with applause for the English striker.

Having joined Getafe on loan from Manchester United on September 1, Greenwood is under the mentorship of Bordalas, who has expressed his commitment to assisting Greenwood in regaining his optimal performance level and rebuilding his career.

Greenwood, who initially debuted for Manchester United at the age of 17 and has since made 129 appearances for the club, remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2025. Following a thorough six-month internal investigation, Manchester United opted to allow Greenwood to continue his football journey elsewhere.
