Missing corpse: Family faults police report, petitions IGP
The Okammelu family has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police IGP for a supplementary investigation into the disappearance of their late brother’s corpse.
The family’s lawyer, Joseph Ofor, Esq., wrote the letter dated July 6, 2026, on behalf of Chief Osita Okammelu, the complainant.
The family had earlier petitioned the IGP over the incident. In response, the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team IGP-IRT investigated the matter and released its report.
However, Okammelu has raised concerns about the findings. Through his lawyer, he accused the report of containing material omissions, inconsistencies and investigative gaps.
According to the letter, the report acknowledged possible criminal conspiracy and systemic failures but recommended prosecuting only one person.
The family also questioned the recommendation for immediate prosecution despite outstanding aspects of the investigation.
Furthermore, the letter accused investigators of failing to examine alleged administrative and operational negligence thoroughly. It also questioned their handling of financial records, call data records and other documentary evidence.
The family argued that the report failed to establish the roles of other listed suspects and resolve critical questions about the disappearance.
The letter identified unresolved issues concerning the chain of custody of the deceased’s corpse, institutional responsibility and the circumstances surrounding its alleged unlawful release and disappearance.
Okammelu said his legal team had prepared a detailed analysis of the gaps in the report. He urged the IGP to review the findings and order further investigations.
The letter stated: “In the interest of justice, public confidence in the investigative process, and the need to ensure that every person who may bear criminal responsibility is properly investigated, our client requests that your distinguished office be pleased to direct a supplementary investigation into the matter, with particular attention to the issues highlighted.”
The family maintained that a comprehensive investigation would establish the facts and ensure justice for all parties without fear or favour.
