NiMet predicts heavy thunderstorms, rainfall across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected widespread thunderstorms and rain showers across various parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, with the possibility of heavy rainfall and strong winds in some regions.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet advised Nigerians, especially those in the northern, central, and southern regions, to prepare for changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions against potential hazards associated with severe weather.
For Monday, early morning thunderstorms, with or without rainfall, are expected in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States. Other parts of the North are predicted to experience sunny weather with patches of clouds. Thunderstorms and rains are forecast in the afternoon and evening over Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna.
On Tuesday, most northern states will see sunny skies with cloud patches, while morning thunderstorms are expected in Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna. By Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are likely across Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Sokoto, with heavier rainfall expected later in the day in several of these areas.
In the North Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, NiMet predicts a mix of morning rains and isolated thunderstorms over the three-day period. On Monday, areas such as Niger, Plateau, and the FCT may experience early morning thunderstorms, while the rest of the region will have sunny intervals with cloud cover. Thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening across Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and parts of the FCT. The pattern is expected to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, with moderate rains and thunderstorms likely in Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the FCT during the afternoon and evening.
In the South, light morning rains are expected on Monday in parts of Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. By afternoon, thunderstorms and light rains are forecast to spread across Ondo, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, and other coastal states. From Tuesday to Wednesday, Akwa Ibom and Cross River are likely to continue experiencing morning rains, with light rains and thunderstorms affecting the broader southern region throughout both days.
NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged the public to take precautionary measures to avoid weather-related risks. The agency advised against driving in heavy rain, recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during storms, and warned residents to stay away from tall trees due to the risk of falling branches. Airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to aid flight planning.
The agency also urged Nigerians to stay informed by following regular weather updates via its official website, [www.nimet.gov.ng](http://www.nimet.gov.ng).
