In a devastating incident on the Bwari-Dutse expressway in Abuja, one person has been confirmed dead, and several others sustained injuries following a vehicle collision that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident was caused by a lorry carrying sand, which was reportedly over-speeding and collided with a taxi, resulting in the death of the taxi driver.

The tragic event unfolded near the army checkpoint in Bwari, leaving a somber scene with two taxis crushed under the weight of the lorry.

The accident highlights the ongoing concerns about road safety in the country. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recently reported a high number of fatalities and injuries in auto crashes across Nigeria between January and March, attributing a significant portion of these incidents to over-speeding.

Dauda Biu, the corps marshal, expressed his dismay at the growing number of road fatalities, stressing the need to enforce the policy on the installation of speed-limiting devices in commercial vehicles. Despite efforts to implement this measure, progress has been slow and challenging.

As authorities investigate the recent accident in Abuja, the focus remains on enhancing road safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
