Stop destroying democracy that made you president — Obi tells Tinubu

Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC presidential candidate, has called on President Bola Tinubu to respect democratic principles and stop actions he says threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi made the remarks in a post on his verified X handle on Monday while demanding the immediate release of Rilwan Olawale, an NDC political mobiliser reportedly arrested at his residence in Lagos.

He condemned the reported arrest, describing it as an attempt to suppress opposition voices and undermine democratic rights.

“President Tinubu should stop undermining the democracy that brought him to power. He has benefited greatly from the democratic system and should not encourage or support violence against political opponents,” Obi wrote.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the alleged use of security agencies to intimidate political opponents.

He warned that political violence and the harassment of opposition figures could undermine democratic participation as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Obi called for Olawale’s release, stressing the need to protect political freedoms and ensure that opposition members can participate in the electoral process without intimidation.
