Police impound 25 vehicles despite court order on tinted glass permit
The Delta State Police Command has seized 25 vehicles in Asaba for violating regulations on tinted glass permits, despite a subsisting court order directing a halt to the enforcement.
A Federal High Court sitting in Warri had, on Friday, restrained the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police from enforcing the tinted glass permit policy, asking them to maintain the status quo pending further hearings.
The development comes amid renewed controversy over the policy. In April, the Nigeria Police Force announced the resumption of tinted glass permits nationwide under the Police Specialised Services Automation Project, after suspending the scheme in 2022.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun had initially set an August 12 deadline for compliance, later extending it to October 2. The Force justified the measure on security grounds, citing the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 1991.
However, in a post on its verified X handle (@DeltaPoliceNG) on Friday, October 3, the Delta Command confirmed that 25 vehicles were impounded in Asaba for allegedly operating with tinted glasses without valid permits.
The situation has raised fresh concerns about compliance with judicial directives and the clash between law enforcement measures and ongoing legal proceedings.
