2027: Abiodun urges church to mobilise Nigerians for peaceful elections

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged the Church in Nigeria to encourage responsible citizenship and peaceful participation in the 2027 general elections.

Abiodun made the call on Wednesday at the opening of the 15th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne, Ogun State.

He urged religious leaders to use their influence to discourage provocation, intimidation, misinformation, electoral malpractice and violence before, during and after the elections.

The governor said elections should focus on competing ideas, policies and programmes rather than creating division among Nigerians.

Speaking at the event, Abiodun urged the church to encourage its members to perform their civic duties responsibly and reject actions that could threaten peaceful elections.

“Elections should be a contest of ideas, visions, and programmes not a battlefield upon which brothers and sisters turn against one another. Political differences are temporary, but the bonds that unite us are enduring,” he said.

He also called on the church to remain a voice for truth, peace and reconciliation while providing constructive advice to government without compromising its independence.

“The prophetic voice of the church must correct without hatred, challenge without bitterness, and speak truth to power without surrendering love,” Abiodun said.

Abiodun said the Anglican Church had contributed significantly to education, healthcare, moral instruction and human development in Ogun State and Nigeria.

He urged the church to pay greater attention to young people by providing mentorship, opportunities and support that could steer them towards productive activities.

The governor also called for stronger cooperation among government, religious and traditional institutions, the private sector, civil society and citizens to promote sustainable development.

The 15th General Synod, themed “The Priesthood of All Believers: Equipping God’s People for the Work of the Ministry,” is being hosted in Ogun State for the first time in 42 years.

The Bishop of Remo and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, Most Reverend Olusina Fape, appreciated members of the diocese for their support in hosting the synod. He urged participants to remain committed to serving their communities and promoting hope and good works.
