United States President Donald Trump has congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the new Pope, Leo XIV, marking a historic moment for the Catholic Church and the United States.
White smoke had risen from the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, signaling the successful election of Cardinal Prevost, who now assumes the papal name Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, President Trump expressed his excitement and pride over the election, calling it a significant honor for the American people.
He wrote, “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
