President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness Leo XIV following his election as the Bishop of Rome and the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. The Nigerian President shared his message through his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday.

In his message, President Tinubu expressed joy over the conclave’s decision to elect American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope, a momentous event for the global Catholic community.

He congratulated the leadership and faithful of the Catholic Church in Nigeria on the historic election of the new Pontiff, whose message of faith and hope is already resonating around the world, offering reassurance from scripture of a future filled with peace.

The President acknowledged the long-standing and valued relationship between Nigeria and the Holy See, emphasizing the positive and fruitful partnership in areas such as peacebuilding, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and more recently, the promotion of technology to enhance human capacity.

In addition, President Tinubu expressed confidence that the election of Pope Leo XIV would mark a new chapter in the Church’s history, one centered on the values of love, humanity, and charity, particularly for the underprivileged, which the Catholic Church has always championed.
