Rubiales’ mum goes on hunger strike, locks self in church after FIFA ban
Angeles Bejar, the mother of Luis Rubiales, has sought refuge within the confines of a church, opting for a hunger strike as she advocates for her son’s exoneration.
Reports from Spain indicate that Bejar has committed to remain within the sanctuary until her son’s case is resolved in his favour.
Luis Rubiales, aged 46, has maintained his position despite facing provisional suspension from FIFA. The global community has widely criticized the FA chief for an incident involving Jenni Hermoso.
During the medal presentation at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent.
Following an emergency assembly convened last Friday, Rubiales resisted stepping down from his role.
Nevertheless, Bejar, his mother, has now embarked on a hunger strike until a resolution is reached. She perceives her son as a victim of what she terms an “inhumane and unjust witch hunt.”
According to the Spanish news agency EFE, Bejar, along with her sister-in-law, discreetly entered the Divina Pastora de Motril Church in Granada on Monday morning. Their presence in the church persists even after the priest’s departure.
Bejar asserts her determination to abstain from eating and insists on maintaining her presence within the church premises.
