Tensions as Benue South youths ask Fulani herdsmen to leave, announce farmland fumigation

A youth group in Benue South, operating under the banner of the Ochetoha K’Idoma Youth Wing, has issued an ultimatum to Fulani herders in the region, demanding their immediate exit amid rising insecurity and violent attacks.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by its President, Comrade Magaji Mike Alidu, the group cited ongoing killings, destruction of property, and repeated assaults on local communities—particularly targeting the Idoma and Igede ethnic groups—as reasons for the demand.
The group highlighted recent incidents in Ojantele Akpete ward of Apa Local Government Area, where multiple people were reportedly killed, homes and farmlands destroyed, public infrastructure vandalized, and cases of rape, theft, and intimidation were recorded.
They stated that these attacks have left many residents displaced and economically crippled.
“This serves as a formal notice and ultimatum to vacate the premises of Benue South with immediate effect,” the statement read, warning that the region can no longer “harbor those who have become known enemies of progress.”
With the new farming season underway, the group also announced plans to fumigate farmlands and bushes across the region. They said the exercise is intended to protect crops and control pests.
However, the group warned that the fumigation could pose a danger to animals and urged herders to leave for their own safety.
“We hereby warn you that our farmland and bushes will not be safe for any animals during this period.
Let it be on record that we have warned you, and we will not be held responsible for any losses or harm that may come,” the statement added.
