Three teenage girls tragically drowned in a pond in Tulla village, located in the Buji local government area of Jigawa State.
According to a statement from ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Jigawa State Command, the victims have been identified as Fatima Sule (12), Nasiya Sale (12), and Huwaila Sa’adu (13).
The girls were reportedly gathering grass near the pond to feed their livestock when the incident occurred.
The NSCDC’s Buji Local Government Divisional Officer received an emergency call from Tulla community members around 11:00 AM on Saturday. He and the disaster management team promptly arrived at the scene.
Alongside members of the community, they were able to recover the bodies of the three young girls after about 30 minutes of search and rescue mission.
The statement added, “The bodies were later taken to the nearest Health Center in Tulla village, where they were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.”
The remains of the girls, according to the statement, were handed over to their respective parents and buried according to Islamic rites.
The statement noted that the incident has left the community in mourning, and the NSCDC has urged residents to be cautious during the rainy season.
