Top 10 universities in Africa for 2025

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2025 have revealed the leading universities in Africa, with South Africa and Egypt dominating the top 10.

South Africa boasts five institutions in the top 10, while Egypt and Algeria lead the region with the most universities on the global rankings, with 35 and 26, respectively.

Nigeria’s Covenant University ranks between 801-1000, holding the highest position for Nigerian universities.

Here are the Top 10 Universities in Africa for 2025:

  1. University of Cape Town (South Africa)

    • The oldest university in South Africa, established in 1829, UCT remains the top university in Africa. It offers programs in six faculties and is home to 30,000 students. UCT is also the only African university in the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF), joining a prestigious group of 26 top universities worldwide.
  2. Stellenbosch University (South Africa)

    • Founded in 1918, Stellenbosch University (SU) is a leading research institution with 32,000 students across five campuses. It has made significant strides in space research, with the launch of Africa’s first microsatellite, SUNSAT, in 1999.
  3. University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa)

    • Known as Wits University, it was established in 1896. With a strong legacy in the mining industry, Wits has over 40,000 students and is one of the top research institutions in South Africa.
  4. Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (Morocco)

    • A private research university founded in 2013, UM6P is based in Morocco’s Green City of Benguerir. It is renowned for its powerful supercomputer and strong global academic partnerships, including with MIT and Columbia Business School.
  5. University of Johannesburg (South Africa)

    • Formed in 2005, UJ is one of South Africa’s largest universities, with over 50,000 students. It offers a diverse range of programs and is committed to increasing international student participation.
  6. Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) (Egypt)

    • Established in 2009 with Japanese support, E-JUST is a rising research institution in Egypt. It was ranked as the best university in Egypt in 2024 and is noted for its global academic and technological partnerships.
  7. University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa)

    • UKZN was formed in 2004 after merging the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville. With five campuses across KwaZulu-Natal, it offers comprehensive programs and has a strong research output.
  8. American University in Cairo (Egypt)

    • AUC is a private research university that offers American-style education in Egypt. With a diverse international student body and a broad range of degree programs, AUC is one of the top universities in Egypt.
  9. Future University in Egypt (Egypt)

    • Founded in 2006, Future University is a prominent private institution in Egypt, located in New Cairo. It is known for its modern infrastructure and academic excellence in various fields.
  10. Kafrelsheikh University (Egypt)

  • Established in 2006, Kafrelsheikh University has 30,000 students and is recognized for its environmental efforts and research capabilities. It is ranked fourth in Egypt for international research citations.

This year’s rankings assessed over 2,000 universities across 115 countries, highlighting Africa’s growing prominence in higher education.

While Oxford, MIT, and Stanford dominate the global rankings, African universities continue to excel regionally, showcasing significant improvements in research, innovation, and academic quality.
